Sengol - Pinterest collection
Aug 1947 - As the day of handing over power was approaching, Mountbatten asked Pt Jawaharlal Nehru what ceremony should be conducted or symbolic action should be taken to achieve this. Pt Nehru consulted Shri C Rajagopalachari who delved into history and civilization of the land. He came up with the answer - do what the Chola kings did. Shri Rajagolachari requested the leader of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam in Tamilnadu to do the same, for Power to pass on to Indian hands. The Adheenam priests rendered “Kolaru Padhigam” (a prayer to remove difficulties) by Tamil poet saint Thirugnanasambandar when the Sengol was handed over to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on Aug 14 1947.
Made of silver, and gold-plated, this was ordered specially by the Adheenam. Jeweller Vummidi Bangaru Chetty in Madras hand-crafted this.
