GUJARATI LITERATURE

* 3 Oct 2026
Bhagvadgomandal is the first comprehensive and monumental encyclopedic dictionary of the Gujarati language, spread across nine large volumes and nearly 10,000 pages.
It was conceived and commissioned by the visionary Maharaja Bhagvatsinghji, the ruler of the princely state of Gondal in Kathiawar, Gujarat and was created by Chandubhai Bahecharbhai Patel. The massive undertaking required 27 years of detailed, scientific compilation and editing. It contains 281,377 words and their meanings and over 8.22 lakh words along with 28,156 idioms and more than 10,000 proverbs. Beyond word definitions, grammar, and origins, it functions as a true encyclopedia. It covers extensive cultural, historical, scientific, and regional knowledge - including Ayurveda, architecture, local flora/fauna, world religions, arts and describes the life and contributions of famous people.

The first edition of the dictionary was printed in 1940 and went out of print in 1958. It was reprinted in 1987 by Pravin Prakashan, Rajkot with a third reprint in 2008.

The entire work has been digitized and made freely accessible online via platforms like bhagavadgomandalonline.com and gujaratilexicon.com
