World Heritage Sites are designated by UNESCO (the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as places of
outstanding value to humanity. These sites can be ancient ruins,
historical structures, cities, natural landscapes, or areas of
exceptional beauty. As of July 2025, there are 1,248 World Heritage
Sites across 170 countries. The designation aims to promote conservation
and protection for future generations, ensuring that these
irreplaceable sites are preserved against threats such as urbanization,
climate change, and tourism.
